The Actors Company Theatre/TACT is casting Incident at Vichy.

SEEKING:

MALE (late 20s to early 30s; Jewish) - LEBEAU. Jewish, a painter (an artist), high-strung, thin (hasn’t eaten in three days), his fear and anxiety make him talk and act out;

MALE (late 20s to early 30s; Jewish) - BAYARD. Jewish, an electrician, has a “muscular austerity” to his manner, respectable working-class socialist with extreme conviction;

MALE (middle-aged) - MARCHAND. Well-to-do businessman, impatient, well-dressed;

MALE (18 and over; Jewish) - MONCEAU. An actor, believes he can perform his way out of trouble and avoid being a victim by refusing to play the part;

MALE (middle-aged; Jewish) - WAITER. Works in a nearby café for Ferrand, small, timid, gentle, panics and breaks down in extreme situations;

MALE (30s; German) - MAJOR. Well-built, career soldier, walks with a slight limp from a war wound, military leader trained as an engineer and for artillery work, but forced by Nazis to work on racial identification and exportation against his will;

MALE (30s; Jewish) - LEDUC. A psychiatrist educated in Vienna at the Psychoanalytic Institute, a keen perceptive intelligence, the most physically imposing of any of the prisoners, quirky leading man; Von

MALE (30s; Austrian) - BERG. Austrian prince, has refined tastes and sensibilities, an amateur musician and lover of the arts, appalled by the Nazis, but rather ineffectual and unchallenging, gentile;

MALE (70s; Jewish) - OLD JEW. Has a beard and carries a large sackcloth bundle, very weak physically, silent, perhaps lost in prayer;

MALE (30s to 40s; French) - POLICE CAPTAIN. Aiding Nazi interrogations, a collaborator who follows orders;

MALE (18 and over; German) - PROFESSOR HOFFMAN. Has a degree in “Racial Anthropology,” working with the Nazis as a Jew-identifier and interrogator, convinced of the rightness of his actions and the purity of his cause;

MALE (15; Jewish) - BOY. Small and thin, “light as a feather”

MALE (18 and over; French) - POLICE GUARD. Unspecified age, French, aiding Nazi interrogation, gentile;

MALE (18 and over; French) - FIRST DETECTIVE. Unspecified age, French, thuggish, collaborator involved with Nazi interrogations;

MALE (18 and over; French) - SECOND DETECTIVE. Unspecified age, French, collaborator involved with Nazi interrogations;

MALE (25 to 40) - GYPSY. Speaks broken English, used to being pushed around, takes it in cheerful spirit;

MALE (18 and over; French) - FERRAND. A café proprietor, the Waiter’s boss, gentile;

MALES (18 and over; Jewish) - PRISONERS. Jewish, echoes of the other characters
